A contaminated site rarely reveals its full complexity at the surface. Contaminant distribution in the subsurface is shaped by factors such as geology, hydrogeology, the physicochemical properties of the substances involved, source characteristics, and the site's occupation history.

That's why investigating means more than collecting samples. It means building a technically sound model of what's happening underground, identifying potential and actual sources of contamination, understanding transport mechanisms, and determining how contaminants are distributed in soil, groundwater, and, where relevant, soil vapor.
The Preliminary Assessment reconstructs the site's environmental history from documents, records, interviews, production processes, and field inspection. Confirmatory Investigation uses field data and analytical results to verify the presence or absence of chemicals of concern. Once contamination is confirmed, Detailed Investigation deepens the characterization, aiming to understand its distribution three-dimensionally and its relationship to local geological and hydrogeological conditions.
Building on that dataset, the Human Health Risk Assessment checks whether the identified exposure scenarios pose a risk to the receptors evaluated, and provides the basis for defining intervention measures.
When conventional approaches don't provide enough data density, High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) techniques can generate continuous, high-density data along the profile investigated. This strategy refines understanding of the subsurface, targets points of interest, and reduces uncertainty in characterization.
Soil and groundwater sampling, vapor assessment, geological and hydrogeological characterization, and high-resolution tools can be combined depending on the questions a project needs to answer.
